We are pleased to announce the acceptance of the project “Iroony® hemp textile materials by ionic liquid-based manufacturing” (short name “Iroony® IL”) within the GALACTICA funding, under European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
This project focuses on the development of an advanced manufacturing process for the production of Iroony® hemp-based materials. The processing of cellulose from organically grown hemp will be optimized by using an ionic liquid which, due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability, represents a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to standard solvents. Austrian partner proionic GmbH, a globally leading manufacturer and supplier of ionic liquids, will be in charge of the production and application of this innovative solvent.
During the next six months, the partnership goal will be to produce prototypes and validate them in the whole value chain and relevant environment. In contrast to synthetic fibers that depend on fossil raw materials, cellulose based fibers are biodegradable and do not harm the environment. In addition, the Iroony® materials result from positive agriculture and offer traceability from the field thanks to our strong connection with French farmers.
